Start with the student’s goals
Ask which subjects interest them, what they want from the programme and why they are considering studying abroad. Listen to the reasons behind their preferences before comparing institutions together.
Review the plan together
- Compare the academic content and qualification, not only a ranking or city name.
- Discuss the total cost and the family’s funding commitments openly.
- Read offer, payment and refund terms before making decisions.
- Talk through accommodation, travel and everyday independence.
- Keep a shared list of deadlines and documents without taking over the student’s application.
Prepare for the transition
Discuss budgeting, managing documents and asking for help. Find out what support the university offers for academic questions, housing and wellbeing. Agree on a communication routine that supports the student while giving them room to settle in.
Questions for counselling
Bring your concerns to the meeting: affordability, course fit, preparation and the practical steps ahead. Ask for a clear explanation of any unresolved requirements. A useful counselling session should help the whole family understand the decision.
